AFRICAN COALITION WORKFORCE

African Coalition Workforce (ACW) mission is to foster economic growth and self-sufficiency for African refugees, immigrants, and San Diego residents who lack the basic skills to access mainstream opportunities by providing employment services, financial empowerment, and youth leadership. acworkforce.org

ALLIANCE FOR AFRICAN ASSISTANCE

The Alliance for African Assistance was founded in 1989 in San Diego, California. It was founded by Walter Lam, a refugee, with the aim of addressing the many needs of San Diego’s growing African refugee population. The Alliance assists, by means of generous contributions and grants, new arrivals in adjusting to American culture. The Alliance for African Assistance has remained unceasing in its dedication to provide social, cultural, and educational support and guidance to all refugees in their resettlement process. alliance-for-africa.org

Alliance San Diego is a community empowerment organization doing local work of national significance in the fields of civic engagement, human rights, educational equity, and tax and fiscal policy. ALTNERATIVE HEALING NETWORK

Alternative Healing Network (AHN), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, promotes the use of integrative healing arts and improves access to ‘alternative’ health care in under-served neighborhoods. AHN hosts weekly free Integrative Health Nights (community outreach clinics) that bring Eastern and Western healing arts together, and operates the Adams Avenue Integrative Health Center on a “Sliding Scale” that helps make these preventive health practices affordable. Alternative Healing Network believe that Western and “Alternative” medicine should be integrated for use together in hospitals and other institutions. They acknowledge the benefits of Biomedical surgery, lab tests and pharmaceutical development as essential in fighting disease, but also see that there are often ‘alternative’ therapies which can be used to promote wellness and prevent illness from ever occurring in the first place. althealnet.org

Crawford Community Connection (CCC)

CCC is a SAY San Diego school-based family resource center located on the Crawford High School campus. CCC partners with diverse community programs to serve Crawford Cluster students and their families by linking them to services such as emergency food, medical and dental assistance, public benefits screenings, and parent and child development services. saysandiego.org/program/crawford-community-connection/

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Students learn about life saving strategies that will prepare them, their family, and their school for an emergency. They work on a project to make their school/community more prepared and safe.

Hoover Athletic Training

Located at Hoover High School, working directly with Christina Saffran, Athletic Trainer. An athletic trainer is a highly educated and skilled allied health professional specializing in athletic care. Athletic trainers cooperate with physicians to provide care for athletes, whether within the school setting or with a sports team. Athletic trainers in California are certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification. Athletic trainers are responsible for: injury prevention, injury evaluation, emergency care of injuries and rehabilitation of injuries. The athletic trainer at Hoover provides the best possible athletic health care to students participating in school athletics, and is committed to reducing the cost of health care for student-athletes by providing as many services as possible within the training room. sandiegounified.org/schools/hoover/about-meathletic-training

HOOVER WELLNESS CENTER

Students work directly with Wellness Center staff to conduct a survey of Hoover students about what they need to be healthy. Students will also look at research, data, and trends and create a project on campus.

International Rescue Committee

The International Rescue Committee provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. The IRC works with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to help them translate their past experiences into assets that are valuable to their new communities.
